Chikugo River Fireworks Display

Visitors Guide

The Chikugo River Fireworks Display takes place in early August. The event’s origin is said to be the fireworks devoted to Suitengu Shrine, giving it an over 350-year history. This display is one of the largest in western Japan, with roughly 18 thousand fireworks being let off at two venues, one in Sasayama and the other in Kyomachi. There are plenty of powerful and impressive fireworks to be seen, such as the “Niagara Falls” across the Chikugo River. Many people from not only Kyushu but the whole country attend the display every year.
