Hojoya Festival at Hakozakigu Shrine

Visitors Guide

Although the official name of Hakozakigu Shrine's enormous festival is "Chushusai", Hojoya (as it is more popularly known) is one of Hakata's Three Major Festivals! The path leading from the front of the shrine's pavillion to the banks of the bay comes to life lined with hundreds of booths, food and drink stalls, and attractions at this autumn tradition. Hojoya is a memorial ritual in which living creatures are released into lakes, rivers, mountains, and forests, and is based on the Buddhist philosophy that humans should not kill. The ritual spread from Usa Shrine to various areas and has been held at Hakozakigu Shrine since 919 AD!
