Mt. Hiko

Visitors Guide

Mount Hiko lies on the border of Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures. Its peak is 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) above sea level. Revered as a holy mountain since ancient times, Mt. Hiko is famous for being hallowed ground along the pilgrimage route for Buddhist monks. In fact, the mountain is one of the “Three Major Mountain Pilgrimage Destinations” (along with Mount Yoshino and Mount Kumano).
Located on Mt. Hiko is the Mt. Hiko Shrine. In the middle of the shrine is the building Hoheiden, which has been designated as an important cultural property of Japan.
During the fall many visitors climb the mountain to see the beautiful fall colors!
