Hiraodai Limestone Plateau is Japan’s representative karst plateau. With its abundance of pure white limestones scattered throughout the expanse, the scene conjures up the image of a flock of sheep on a glassland. Along with the limestone cave beneath it, Hiraodai is designated as a Natural Treasure.
Visitors can enjoy the changing scenery of the plateau throughout the year, from field burning and the fresh green leaves in the spring to the silver-grass fields of the fall. The area is has been designated part of Kitakyushu Quasi-National Park and is a good place for hiking!
*About the Karst Plateau: Altitude - 400-600 meters (1,300 - 1,970 feet), north through south - 11 kilometers (nearly 7 miles), east through west - 2 kilometers (over 1 mile)
