Miyajidake Shrine is primarily dedicated to Okinagatarashi Hime no Mikoto (another name for Empress Jingu) and attracts over 2 million worshippers a year who pray for commercial success, good luck, and to ward off adversity.
The shrine conducts the “Tsuitachi Mairi” ritual on the first day of each month, beginning the First Prayer Festival at midnight. On these days, the paths leading to the shrine are lined with souvenir and food stalls open until late at night, drawing many worshippers all day long. Some of the shrines features are its regal, five-ton sacred straw rope, its giant bass drum, and its great bell, which are collectively known as “the Three Number Ones” and are quite famous. Worshippers hoping for a little extra luck should try visiting each of the eight shrines on the grounds, a tradition known as “Oku no Miya Hachisha Mairi”.
Cherry blossoms, irises, and other seasonal flowers bloom throughout the year, and there are the Minkamura Natural Park and small petting zoo with horses, ponies, and goats that children will love! Don’t miss the sight of the city stretching to the ocean from the top of the stairs as you descend!
