Tochoji Temple

Built by famous Buddhist priest Kukai after his training in China in hopes that esoteric Buddhism would spread to the far East, Tochoji Temple has the largest wooden statue of Buddha seated on a pedestal in Japan. The temple is also the repository of the remains of the second and third feudal lords of the Chikuzen Province (Kuroda Tadayuki and Kuroda Mitsuyuki, respectively). Many worshippers visit Tochoji Temple for the first “Fudo” (a Buddhist god) Festival of the year on January 28, “Setsubun” (Coming of Spring) Festival in February, and the anniversary of Kukai’s death in March.
