Hakozakigu Shrine

Hakozakigu Shrine is one of the three major Hachimangu Shrines in Japan. As there are several theories about the age of its establishment, it is difficult to determine the age accurately. According to one of the theories, in 921 A.D. (Engi 21), after receiving a revelation, Emperor Daigo signed documents called ”Surrender of Enemy Country” and ordered the building of a magnificent shrine on the Genkai Sea, towards the continent. In 923 A.D., spiritual embodiments were said to be transferred from Oita (Honami) Shrine to this shrine. The region is close to the continent, and has been culturally open since ancient times. It was especially a door of international exchange, as well as a strategic point of defense for the country. The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and mythical goddess Tamayori Hime no Mikoto.
