Said to be the only water wheel in Japan used in actual irrigation, this triple water wheel is well-known by its nickname, “the steam locomotive of the rice field”. It is a Municipally-Designated Tangible Folk Cultural Asset and became a Government-Designated Historical Site in 1990. The water wheel currently operates between mid June (occasionally late May) and mid October, irrigating an area of 35 hectares (about 86.5 acres) along with two other pumping water wheels (Mijima Double Water Wheel and Hisashige Double Water Wheel).
